Enhancing Police Intervention in Domestic Violence

Promising Practices in Risk Assessment and Community Collaboration

A conference for police and allied professionals and agencies was held on September 23 and 24, 2004 in London, Ontario, Canada.

For a list of speakers, see the Conference Brochure.

Participants included leaders from across Canada who have developed innovative policies and practices to enhance police response to victims, perpetrators and children exposed to domestic violence. Community partners, such as shelters for abused women, children's services and programs for perpetrators, played a role in highlighting the importance of collaboration. Throughout the conference there were opportunities for participants to join facilitated discussions on challenging issues and collaborative solutions.

A Handbook for Police Responding to Domestic Violence (2004)

A resource funded by the Department of Justice and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. Topics addressed include understanding the impact of domestic violence on children and adolescents, special considerations for police officers, promising practices, distinguishing features of domestic violence crimes, recognizing the presence of children at the scene, and issues related to dual arrest.
