Teaching Support
You will find on this CD four resources for professors and two resources suitable for use as required or optional student reading.
Through a New Lens: Seeing Woman Abuse in the Life of a Young Child -- A Learning Module for Early Childhood Education Programs (2005)
 |
In 25 pages, the professor gets all the material required to plan a two-hour lecture -- or a full-day workshop. The module document outlines learning objectives, recommended learning resources (all available on-line), suggested videos/DVDs, supplementary learning activities for students, case studies for discussion, a list of optional class handouts, some background statistics and research, and a test bank of multiple choice and short answer questions. Professors can explain why students need to learn about woman abuse, how children might be affected, and what signs of distress might be seen in the child care setting. They will be able to suggest strategies for the child care setting to support child adjustment and to respond to challenging behaviours. Special contingencies when families are in shelters can also be addressed.

Through a New Lens: PowerPoint Slides for the Learning Module (2005)
Included on the CD is a slide show in the PowerPoint format with a complete lecture for ECE programs about woman abuse and its effects on young children. Tailor the slide show to suit the length and focus of your lecture by adding the course title, deleting slides if redundant with material taught elsewhere or if the material is not appropriate for the course. You can also add material if desired. |

Through a New Lens...
The goal here is to encourage the next generation of early childhood educators to consider woman abuse as one of the many possible factors triggering symptoms of stress and distress in infants, toddlers, and young children. For many students, this will be a new lens, one in which violence at home and other family adversities are taken into account when designing strategies for the classroom and suggesting referrals to the family. It can be easy to assign labels to youngsters, such as difficult temperament, hyperactive, cranky, moody, defiant, oppositional, or conduct disordered. Look deeper and consider other possible explanations that may define very different intervention strategies.
... seeing woman abuse in the life of a child
At the same time, each child is unique so do not generalize or stereotype. Not all children exposed to woman abuse are affected in the same way. Even children in the same family experiencing the same adversities will have different stress symptoms and coping styles.
